How You Can Stay Healthy and Safe at Work

When you work at a location outside of your home, perhaps in an office or in another environment, you can find that focusing on your health and safety takes a backseat. When these areas stop becoming a priority, you will end up exposing yourself to more risk and harm than you realize. Taking back control is important. However, how can you make this happen?

Make Sure You Take Regular Breaks

The first step you can take is to start taking regular breaks. Regular breaks will give you the downtime at work you need and help you to focus on what is important within your place of work. If you are not taking regular breaks (even five or ten minutes), you will be pushing yourself too far. Your vision and focus can become blurred when you are tired, and this is when most accidents or injuries can occur in the workplace.

Eat Well and Eat Regularly

No matter how long your day lasts, you must always make sure you eat healthily and regularly. If you are skipping meals or just not eating healthy foodstuffs, problems may start to occur. At work, you need to have the energy and concentration to stay healthy and safe. If you are eating nutritionally balanced meals and snacks throughout the day, you will struggle to maintain focus. When you are not focused, you can try to cut corners or save time, and this is when accidents are likely to happen.

Always Wear the Correct Attire

If you are working outside of an office or working in different environments regularly, you have to be certain that you are always wearing the correct attire. This may mean wearing wide fitting safety shoes to protect your feet, a helmet or hard hat to protect your head, safety goggles or glasses, and possibly even gloves. When you are certain you are always wearing the correct attire, you are proactive and reducing your exposure to danger.

Protect Yourself Against Infections

In any workplace, you will find those common colds and even sickness bugs regularly circulate and do the rounds. Where possible, try and protect yourself from infections. This may mean wearing a mask when in close contact with others. Or, it may mean implementing better hygiene protocols, such as the increased cleaning and disinfecting of work areas and stations and better regular hand washing and sanitizing.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of fluids is crucial when you are at work. If you are not staying hydrated, you risk pushing your body too far and effectively running on empty. Drinking plenty of water and avoiding caffeine where you can is going to allow you to stay hydrated and alert. If you are struggling to get the fluids that you need, then consider taking a full water bottle in with you each day. This way, you can monitor how much you are drinking, and you can therefore avoid dehydration. Try to drink between one and a half and two liters of water each day while you are at work.
